Seventy-five Years of
SCIENCE NEWS

March 1, 1997 / Volume 151 / Number 9

SCIENCE NEWS debuted as a magazine on March 13, 1922, under the name SCIENCE NEWS LETTER. The premiere issue heralded the arrival of radio broadcasting with a report on the first allocation of radio wavelengths by the federal government.

Upset by what they regarded as misinformation about science in newspapers and an increasingly superstitious mindset in the U.S. population, the founders of Science Service wanted to convey the process of science and the discoveries of scientists to a wide audience.

During the last 75 years, the writers of SCIENCE NEWS LETTER and SCIENCE NEWS have reported a wide range of advances in science and technology, including some that served as the underpinnings for major research efforts and others that were quietly forgotten or shunted aside. The 75th anniversary issue of SCIENCE NEWS looks to the future. The writers describe a selection of ideas, many considered fanciful just yesterday, that they expect to become fruitful topics of tomorrow's scientific enterprise.

The online anniversary edition also includes original science poetry (selected from thousands of poems submitted) and a humorous glimpse of research in the next century.
