Papermaking's Past Though computers have recently
threatened it with obsolescence, paper has been the communications medium of choice for
the past 2 millenia. To explore the history of this ubiquitous material, take a virtual
that is, paperless tour of the Robert C. Williams American Museum of
Papermaking in Atlanta. The Web site traces the history of paper from its invention in
ancient China (where yellow dye doubled as an insect repellent) to the processing
techniques used in modern paper mills. Take a look at the elegant watermark designed to
commemorate the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
