Pumping Poly

Bulk up on recent research on artificial muscles at this highly animated Web site by the University of New Mexico's Artificial Muscle Research Institute. View video clips of a prototype squeezing device for failing hearts. Observe skeletons that pedal bicycles and move their arms. Special polymer strips that bend and stretch under electrical control activate these devices. And there's more to come. In 2002, a tiny spacecraft will use such strips to power wipers for clearing away dust. Insect-like robots that swim or fly are in the works. Human muscle replacements may someday follow.
