Back to Pompeii
The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. buried the Roman city of Pompeii under layers of volcanic ash and dust. John J. Dobbins of the University of Virginia is leading a project to use computers to make three-dimensional models of structures found in the forum at the city's center. The project's fascinating Web site includes archival photographs and surveys of the archaeological site, first-hand accounts of the eruption, and newly discovered details of Roman engineering and construction practices.
