Ancient Medicine

Did you know that the poet Homer had a pretty good handle on anatomy? Descriptions of fatal wounds in the Iliad were surprisingly detailed. Read about that and more at the Asclepion, a Web site devoted to the study of ancient medicine. It was designed to present the study of ancient medicine in a way that’s both accessible and useful to the general public and to students enrolled in Ancient Medicine, a history course taught by Professor Nancy Demand at Indiana University, Bloomington. The text-heavy site describes medical practices in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece. If you’re looking for pictures, check out the snapshots of Greek and Roman surgical instruments.
