TRACES IN THE DUST. New infrared image (top) shows the disk of dust surrounding the star Beta Pictoris. The disk's inner part, A, is tilted, or warped, with respect to the outer part. B indicates a ring of dust, some 40 AU from the star. C indicates a concentration of dust residing even farther out. Visible-light image of radiation reflected by dust (middle) shows a warp (arrow) at a greater distance and tilted in the opposite direction from that in the top image. The orbits of the planets in our solar system (bottom) would easily fit inside the Beta Pictoris disk. Credit: Koerner, Wahhaj, et al./NASA
