LOOK HARD. Fine, metal-laden particles from industrial sources in Hettstedt, Germany, are too diffuse to make the air hazy. When Environmental Protection Agency scientists collected and applied these particles to lung tissue from mice, however, they aggravated symptoms of asthma.
