HOT-WIRED. The artificial muscle (red wire) that moves this plastic arm draws its power directly from a chemical reaction. Catalyzed by platinum nanoparticles on the nickel-titanium wire's surface, methanol fumes rising from the bowl become oxidized. The reaction heats the wire, which causes it to shrink and to force the arm to extend. Credit: J. Oh, M. Kozlov/Nanotech Institute, Univ. of Texas–Dallas
