These maps show the roadless area in the Front Range of Colorado in 1937 (above) and in 1997 (below). Denver is at the bottom of the map, and the Colorado-Wyoming border lies along the top. What appears as elevation is a representation of distance to the nearest road. Over the sixty year period, nearly half of the roadless volume was lost. Credit: USGS (both images)
