BEYOND THE SUN

A fair-skinned person basking in the sun in a bathing suit could get 20,000 international units of vitamin D in half an hour. Natural and fortified foods offer much less (estimates below). Though an Institute of Medicine panel recently recommended that adults up to age 70 get 600 international units daily, guidelines from the Endocrine Society suggest 1,500 to 2,000 IU.
