WHITE WAS GREEN

Today’s polar bears may be able to trace a maternal line to an ancestral female brown bear in Ireland. The two species had already diverged when she mated with a polar bear, but her maternally inherited DNA spread through the other species so that today's polar bears all seem to carry her mitochondrial DNA.
