DEAD OR ALIVE?
These E. coli cells collected from lettuce weren't growing, which scientists had assumed meant they were dead. It turns out that only the cells stained red are dead; cells shown in green are still alive but dormant, offering a hint at how the source of a recent E. coli outbreak may have eluded detection.
