DISASTER SITE

Last March, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit about 130 kilometers off the coast of Sendai, Japan. The quake triggered a tsunami, as well as a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. Villages along the Sanriku coast, north of Sendai, felt the tsunami most dramatically. Scientists hope they can learn to better protect such areas with the help of a global buoy system.
