BOOM STAR

The remnant of a type 1a supernova that occurred in 1572 is called the Tycho supernova because Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe observed the explosion from his Scandinavian perch. The expanding bubble, now more than 55 light-years across, is probably the product of a white dwarf’s interaction with a larger companion. Credit: NASA, CXC, Rutgers, K.Eriksen et al.; DSS

  • Actually it was observed on Earth in 1572. It occurred several thousand years before then as it is estimated to be at least 8,000 light years from Earth.
