Drilling for ice

NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander's Surface Stereo Imager took this image on July 15, the 50th Martian day of the Phoenix mission. At the top sit two divots created by the robotic arm's motorized rasp tool. The holes are about one centimeter apart. The scientists are testing the ability of the rasp to loosen the hard, ice-laden soil to send to the lander’s “tasting” instrument, TEGA.
