BUGGY MUGS
View larger image | For those willing to look closely, the faces of Polistes fuscatus wasps (top) differ in markings and shades. Queens who build joint nests pick up on those differences, too. In tests asking the wasps to choose a target image from two possible offerings, P. fuscatus queens recognized full faces better than other images. Singleton queens, of the species P. metricus, didn’t show the same aptitude. Credit: Source: M. Sheehan and E. Tibbetts/Science 2011; Image:M. Sheehan
