From wolves to pugs

Dogs were domesticated from wolves starting about 33,000 years ago. About 300 years ago people began breeding dogs for particular traits. Within a particular breed there’s a relatively small amount of genetic diversity (represented by arrow thickness). That makes it easier for scientists to tease out the genetic roots of a particular disease. Credit: Adapted from A. Boyko/Genome Biology 2011
