Scientists merged high-resolution visual and near-infrared photographs from MESSENGER's second flyby of Mercury to create images that show the planet's surface. Regions covered in dark blue material were likely excavated during a surface impact. MESSENGER scientists believe that the composition of Mercury’s crust is marbled.
