ATOM FLIPPING

With a strong enough magnet and slow enough motion, it’s possible to flip the direction of an atom’s magnetic spin axis (orange line), as illustrated here. Try to flip it too quickly, and the direction of the spin axis will veer out of control (rightmost sphere). New equations show it’s possible to achieve a quick flip and still maintain control of the spin axis (center). Credit: Gwendal Kervern, University of Lyon, Villeurbanne, France
