BAD EATING HABITS

Given the chance to eat or avoid a harmful bacteria, C. elegans from Hawaii consumed while lab strains steered clear, as shown by the amount of harmful bacteria in their gut in the Hawaiian worms’ guts (shown green, top right) versus the guts of lab worms (top left). Both populations ate similar amounts of harmful bacteria and had indistinguishable death rates when the bacteria were unavoidable (bottom panel). Credit: MAGE CREDIT: Reddy et al., Science, 2009
