LEADEN BRAIN

Shown is a composite map of data from the brains of 157 now-adult Cincinnati study participants. Red and yellow areas show regions that sustained a lead-related reduction in tissue volume, based on blood data collected when each individual was 5 years old. The biggest area affected: a frontal lobe segment responsible for planning, attention, impulsivity and reasoning. Credit: K. Cecil, C. Brubaker, and K. Dietrich, images from an unpublished study
