Using fluorescence detector telescopes at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina, astronomers say they have found evidence that many of the highest-energy cosmic rays are iron nuclei rather than protons. Another cosmic ray observatory, however, reports no sign of iron. Credit: Auger
