A natural wonder-to-be

More than 8,000 years ago, Lake Erie was an isolated body of water, so the Niagara River - which today spills over the falls on its way to Lake Ontario - was fed only by local streams and carried no more than 10 percent of today's flow. The falls' erosive march upstream (see map) resumed about 6,300 years ago, when changes in the post-ice age landscape rerouted the spillover from Lake Huron to Lake Erie and the river regained full flow.
