Viruses, not much more than genetic material wrapped in a protein coat, need a host to reproduce: most bacteria-infecting viruses, or phages, inject just genetic material into a host cell. In animal hosts, the whole virus usually enters. Both hijack host machinery to make new viruses. Credit: A. Nandy, Source: Lehninger, Nelson and Cox, Principles of Biochemistry, 2nd Edition, 1993
