Silent activity

In sleep, the body may be still, but the brain is active. Scientists hoping to learn about sleep listen in to brain activity by recording brain waves distinct to sleep and its different stages. The wavy lines, left, are recorded from electrodes attached to the sleeper’s scalp and read by an electroencephalograph, or EEG.
