Fungi reach out
Cladonia grayi fungi (A) and a unicellular alga (B) grow solo in the lab. The fungus sends out threadlike hyphae that overgrow the algal cells (C) to create a lichen. The mature lichen that forms (D) looks much more complex than the sum of its parts.
