Atomic shuffle

Simulations of silicon reveal that atoms near the tip of a crack rearrange themselves from two six-member rings to a five- and seven-member ring (inset). The change may hold the crack at bay until another bond (arrow, top right) gives way, allowing the other rings to unzip (arrow, bottom right). Credit: M. Buehler, M.
