New observations reveal that the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, is heated by jets of gas, which may explain why the sun’s corona is so much hotter than the sun’s surface. A spacecraft saw evidence of coronal heating (left, with close-up at right) just seconds after another craft detected jet activity.
