ROCKY INSULATOR

This vista, some 4,300 meters above sea level, shows a 5-kilometer stretch of India's Jaundhar Glacier in the western Himalaya that's blanketed by a thick coating of rocky debris. A new study suggests such debris is stabilizing some glaciers in the Karakoram region of the Himalayas, even as ice cover in neighboring ranges continues to shrink.
