Runaway glacier

In the early 2000s, Greenland’s Helheim Glacier retreated from the sea. In this sequence of pictures, the glacier is flowing from the left, and the white crumbly bits to its right are broken up chunks of ice called icebergs. The left picture was taken in May 2001, the middle one in July 2003, and the right one in June 2005. Credit: NASA/GSFC/METI/ERSDAC/JAROS/ASTER Science Team
