Eros: The movie
August 18th, 2001; Vol.160 #7 (p. 105)
Close-ups of the asteroid 433 Eros, showing fields of boulders and debris-filled craters are featured in a minute-long movie posted Aug. 1 on the Internet (http://near.jhuapl.edu/). The movie was compiled from 64 images taken by the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous Shoemaker mission during the last 5 kilometers of its descent onto the space rock last February (SN: 7/21/01, p. 38). The final frame resolves features as small as a golf ball.
