Take the time to break quantum encryption
The feat is theoretically possible thanks to a time-travel scenario permitted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity

Quantum physics offers James Bond and his ilk much more than a bit of solace—it permits quantum encryption, a completely spyproof way to send coded information. Eavesdropping by a third party can always be detected.

But now physicists have suggested that quantum codes may be breakable. The feat involves a trick that even Bond hasn’t mastered yet — time travel. By taking advantage of hidden paths to the past — routes that are predicted by some of Einstein’s equations — a nemesis could eavesdrop on a quantum-coded message without being detected.

Time travel, such as, say, through a “wormhole,” appears to make it possible to distinguish quantum information that usually can’t be distinguished. That ability would disrupt the absolute security of quantum encryption, theoretical physicist Todd Brun and collaborators report online in the quantum physics archive (arXiv:0811.1209v1).

“I believe it is a sound result that quantum cryptography would not work in this world,” comments Charles Bennett, who with Gilles Brassard developed the first quantum encryption protocol in 1984. “You might say it is a weakness of quantum cryptography — but if there were wormholes, people could go back in time and do worse feats of mischief than reading secret messages,” says Bennett, who was not involved in the new research.

Of course, governments and their agents have been passing secret messages since long before the arrival of quantum physics. Good old-fashioned encryption and quantum encryption alike rely on both the sender and recipient having a secret shared key to create or decipher the coded message. The key code might replace letters with numbers, or substitute shapes for words. As long as both parties are the only ones with the key to the code, “secret” messages can be sent in plain sight, yet remain secret.

Old-fashioned codes for sending messages between distant communicators are vulnerable because an eavesdropper might intercept the key. But in the quantum world, a key can be transmitted securely because quantum information is changed when it is looked at, alerting the sender and recipient when an eavesdropper is afoot.

For a quantum eavesdropper, “the only way not to be detected is to acquire no information because measurements disturb the state,” says Brun, of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

The inevitable detection of quantum-code eavesdropping results from the bewildering weirdness of interactions in the quantum world. A quantum particle (such as a photon of light) can exist in a fuzzy mixture of various states. But measuring the particle converts it to a particular “preferred state.” Imagine catching a bird in flight. In the quantum world, as long as it is in flight, the bird may be anything, from a pelican to a chickadee. But once it is caught, the bird becomes one bird only, and what it becomes is affected by the net you use to catch it.

Because measuring quantum information can affect it, an eavesdropper cannot escape detection. Say Alice sends Bob a chickadee that Eve intercepts. If Eve uses the wrong net, a big net for example, she won’t catch a chickadee, but a pelican. When Eve sends the intercepted bird along to Bob, eventually Bob and Alice will realize that Bob’s getting big birds when he should be catching small ones.

The new paper, though, mathematically describes how time travel could allow Eve to catch and send Alice’s bird in a way that subverts quantum encryption. Eve must send the bird through a wormhole in spacetime that creates a “closed timelike curve,” a path that allows time travel under the rules of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Eve’s bird could interact with its younger self at the wormhole’s other end and become a clearly distinguishable bird.

This scenario can’t be ruled out, says Bennett, of IBM’s Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. Like black holes, the existence of wormholes is valid on paper. (Picture traveling through regular time as walking along the surface of an apple—a “wormhole” goes through the apple, connecting you to the future or past.) The existence of wormholes “is not totally impossible, but it is pretty damn unlikely,” he says.

Even if wormholes did exist, they would probably be so small and unstable that they wouldn’t be around long enough to pass a message through. So quantum encryption seems safe for now. And while quantum encryption is a thriving field of research, it is in its early stages and most spies still use good old-fashioned methods, says Brun.

Of course, in both scenarios there is still a possibility that Alice or Bob is a double agent. This human frailty means that “the best schemes that people use involve guys with briefcases handcuffed to their wrists, even though none of that is perfectly secure” says Brun. “Unfortunately, science can only take you so far.”

  • Hi Marc Ricciardi;

    Thanks for the enthusiasm.

Perhaps another way to send secret messages is to chain the briefcase to the hand of a courier and transform the courier’s body and briefcase into a neutrino-like state with respect to ambient surroundings, or for secure long distance space flight, the same.
Another interesting potential technology that involves neutrinos or neutrino-like states is the possibility, that at some distant future date, human civilization may develop technology that also enables baryonic matter in the molecular and atomic forms that compose the human body and our technological artifacts to be convertible or transformable into very weakly interacting matter with respect the external environment within which the human person or artifact exists.

If, for instance, a space craft could be converted into a neutrino like form that is traveling essentially at the speed of light in a vacuum, then the issues of the space craft colliding with interstellar debris, planets, or stars would be essentially entirely eliminated. Thus, the craft could travel for cosmic periods of time and cosmic spatial distances within one average human familial generation ship's reference frame.

Perhaps applying nothing other than the electroweak unification, or further developments within the field of electroweak theory, especially applied electroweak theory, might enable the use of tansformative technologies that utilize the electroweak mixing parameter to temporary suspend or greatly mute the electromagnetic interaction between the atoms that make up a manned space craft and its contents with the interstellar medium.

If such a system or technology could convert a space craft into weakly interacting form, the space craft could probably pass through a star, or perhaps even a white dwarf, and with nanotech self assembly based repair mechanisms, repair any damage caused to the space craft, its cargo, and its crew members bodies that could have resulted from the interacting of some of the ships atoms and that of its contents with the stellar body.

It is good to note that a beam of neutrinos can pass through several light years of lead yet remain largely un attenuated.

An even more profound technology would involve the use of electroweak-strong theory or G.U.T. theory based technology to not only screen the space craft and its contents from electromagnetic interaction with the interstellar medium and from planet s and stars, but also from strong nuclear force interaction of the nucleus and nucleons that make up the atomic nuclei within the atoms composing the ship with the nuclei and nucleons within the interstellar medium and also within stars and planets.

One can see that as electroweak theory develops to such an extent wherein such transformative technology becomes possible or when G.U.T.s develope to such an extent wherein applied G.U.T.s enable such electroweak-strong transformative technology, we might be able to sport about the Universe at essentially light speed or C. Imagine converting the entire planet Earth into such a weakly interacting world with respect to the ambient space environment it occupies and then inducing the Earth to travel at essentially C or C - e wherein e might be made vanishingly small.

Talk about perhaps being a nomadic species one day, except perhaps with technology that may far surpass that of just about any and every existent interstellar space faring civilization. Perhaps we could move Earth to the far reaches of the currently observable universe in one year or less Earth’s reference frame, or do the same with any other solar or extra solar planetary bodies we may colonize.

Note that the basic foundations of classical electromagnetic theory where laid in the 19th Century largely by Maxwell, and look at all of the electromagnetic equipment that surrounds us in daily 21st century life; TVs, durable, efficient, and ubiquitous electric motors, Cell Phones, Radar, Electric Lighting, Computers, Camcorders, IPODS, and the list goes on.

The Nobel Prize for the Electroweak Unification which is a theoretical framework that unifies the electromagnetic force with that of the weak nuclear force (which is responsible for certain forms of radioactive decay) was awarded several years ago. The basics of the electroweak unification were largely worked out in the 1960s and 1970s. God only knows what applications can or will arise over the next few centuries as the Electroweak theoretical framework is developed further
Since most of us humans profess some sort of religious faith that holds the future physically eternal existence of the human race to be a reality, even in bodily form, a good example of such being the belief in the future to be Resurrected and Glorified human bodies being reunited to the immortal soul that animated the body in life on Earth, which is considered by Catholics like myself to be one the central doctrines of Christian Faith, why not plan for a great radiating of human kind ever further out into this great universe that we live in and plan for such. The Sun will only continue shinning for another 5.5 billion years and so it is never to early to plan. Technologies such as the ones I speculate about above may not be developed for another billion to trillion + years, but as I like to say, it is never to early to plan.

I quoted the title of a movie by that name because I feel that space travel, perhaps even hyperspace travel, and God knows what else is the destiny of our species.

  • Perhaps if large or macroscopic wormholes are not available for centuries if not for millennia to come, microscopic wormholes with mouths and throats on the order of 100 nanometers wide or less might be produced allowing backward time travel of nano-bots which would perform the observation of the quantum encrypted information.

It occurred to me while thinking about Holographic Information Theory that an analogous theoretical framework might permit the complete knowledge of the thermodynamic states within a region enclosed by a given 2-D surface membrane. This observation would accordingly include all quantum mechanical information contained within including that of the processes of de-coherence, even to the point of observing the evolution of de-coherence as it takes place in real time.

Recall that in Holographic information theory, the maximum possible value of the entropy in a volume of space enclosed by a 2-D surface is equal to the surface area of the enclosing surface expressed in square Planck Distance Units divided by four.

Perhaps a better more conventional method of sending coded information is to sent it in the form of a beam of neutrinos. The relative location of the transmitter and receiver would be prearranged so that the beam could be produced and not intercepted by others not meant to receive it.

Recall that during the late 1970s, a method of sending signals to nuclear submarines was proposed in which a system for generating neutrino beams that would carry coded information whereby, at a prearranged location, the neutrino beam would be intercepted thus allowing the pulsed neutrino beams to partially interact with detectors on board the submarines. If enough neutrinos where included within each pulse, several could be made to interact with the detector thus enabling a statistically significant signal to be transmitted.

Such a system would be useful since the beam could be directed through ocean water, the Earth’s crust, mantel, and core, and atmosphere yet remain undetected.

For information security for our future space based assets including manned space craft space stations and bases on other planetary bodies, such a neutrino beam system might make an outstanding and secure transmission mechanism that would not rely of quantum encrypted information and which could be just as hard to decipher, if not more so, than a quantum encrypted signal.
