Chimps living in an African sanctuary, including this one, participated in experiments indicating to researchers that these animals understand the process of cooking. Eating of cooked food may have begun long before the start of controlled fire use, the investigators speculate.

Omo I skull

ADAM OR EVE  The new miniseries First Peoples tells the story of how humans emerged in Africa and went on to colonize the rest of the world. Found in Ethiopia, this roughly 195,000-year-old skull known as Omo I is the oldest known Homo sapiens fossil.

In the early 1800s, cephalopod researcher Jeanne Villepreux-Power showed that the paper nautilus (Argonauta argo) creates its own shell. Much of Villepreux-Power’s work was lost in a shipwreck.
