Dubbed the Butterfly Nebula, this region lies 3,800 light-years from Earth. Hidden by dust, a dying star that was once five times the sun’s mass lies at the center of the image. NASA, ESA, and the Hubble SM4 ERO Team Five grueling space walks in May (“Healing Hubble”, SN Online: 5/26/09) have transformed the aging — and ailing — Hubble Space Telescope into a brand new observatory.
