Algae could make bioplastics to craft sustainable habitats for future humans

Dunaliella tertiolecta (shown), a species of green algae, grew inside chambers made of the bioplastic polylactic acid. Using the habitats to grow bioplastic-producing algae and plants in space could create a self-sustaining loop to procure more building material.
